🗺️ The Circuits: How to Tackle the Temples

Depending on your energy, choose your adventure.

1. The Small Circuit (The “Greatest Hits”)

  • Time: 1 Full, Hot Day.
  • Temples: Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom, Bayon, Ta Phrom (Tomb Raider Temple), Banteay Kdei.
  • The Saralya Strategy: Do this circuit backward to avoid the massive tour bus crowds. Start at Ta Phrom and end at Angkor Wat.

Saralya Pro Tip: You really want a driver and a guide for the Small Circuit.

  • Why? This is the 8th Wonder of the World, but signage is non-existent and cell service is dead. You cannot truly experience or understand the history without a professional storyteller.
  • The Solution: Don’t just look at the stones; let us arrange the best experience ever. We connect you with vetted guides who make the history come alive. Do this on Day One, and you’ll understand everything else better.

2. The Grand Circuit (Deeper Dive)

  • Time: 1 Day.
  • Temples: Preah Khan, Neak Pean, Ta Som, East Mebon, Pre Rup.
  • Vibe: Quieter, more atmospheric, and fewer crowds than the Small Circuit.

3. The Outer Circuit (Off the Beaten Path)

  • Time: 1 Day (Requires longer travel time).
  • Temples: Kbal Spean, Beng Mealea, Banteay Srei.
  • Why Go: This is where the true Indiana Jones adventure happens.

❤️ John & Heather’s Favorites (Must-See)

We have explored them all. These are the ones that stole our hearts.

Banteay Srei (The Pink Temple)

Our absolute favorite. A smaller temple with the most intricate, beautiful carvings in the entire park. The pink sandstone glows in the morning light.

Victory Gate (Angkor Thom)

The magnificent head/face tower at the top, entangled with banyan trees, is spectacular. This is one of our favorite photo spots—mysterious and powerful.

Kbal Spean (River of 1000 Lingas)

A 1–1.5 hour drive followed by a 30-minute hike. You will find ancient carvings etched directly into the riverbed. A true nature + history adventure.

Beng Mealea (The Jungle Temple)

Located 1.5 hours away. This temple is largely unrestored, with massive trees growing right out of the stones. It feels wild and undiscovered.

  • Warning: If driving yourself, download offline maps! Cell service is spotty.

📸 Fun & Unique Experiences Inside the Park

Don’t just look at rocks—make memories.

1. The Sacred Photo Shoot

  • Rent Traditional Outfits: $15 – $30 USD (depending on accessories). Dress like Khmer royalty for the day!
  • Hire a Photographer: $2 per picture. They follow you all day to as many temples as you want. At the end, you only pay for the digital photos you choose. We did this with a group of 6 and had a blast!

2. Monk Blessings

Several active pagodas inside the park offer traditional water blessings.

  • Cost: A small donation.
  • Experience: A profound moment of connection and culture amidst the history.

3. Eating Local

Eat at the small family restaurants along the temple roads. Don’t let the guide take you to an over-priced restaurant – go local!

  • Benefit: The food is delicious, cheaper, and you support local families. Plus, it’s not mobbed by tour groups!

🚲 Getting Around

You have options!

  • Scooter: The most freedom (Rent from us!).
    • PRO TIP: We will share with you our secret spots!
  • Tuk-Tuk: Relax and let a driver navigate.
  • Bicycle: For the fit and adventurous.

Tech Tip: There is NO Internet deep within the park. Download the Smart Guide Audio App and offline Google Maps before you leave Saralya House. This will help you navigate The large and outer circuits.
